Building a brighter future together

Empowering
Single Mothers

Torus empowers B40 single mothers with stable, dignified income through reliable, structured home-based work opportunities.

How is the Torus team Empowering Single Mothers?

Torus is a multidisciplinary team brought together through the SEEd.Lab Social Enterprise Programme, an initiative powered by PETRONAS and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to nurture purpose-driven innovators addressing social challenges in Malaysia.

Our team combines expertise in technology, business operations, strategy, entrepreneurship, and community engagement. While our professional backgrounds differ, we share one common belief: meaningful impact begins with understanding real human stories.

Rather than starting with assumptions, we focus on listening, learning, and engaging directly with the mothers we hope to serve. Our approach is grounded in deep research, genuine empathy, and a commitment to sustainable change.

Torus Community

Our Mission

To empower vulnerable communities by enabling sustainable income opportunities through research, collaboration, and practical innovation.

We aim to help communities achieve greater income stability, improved financial resilience, and access to dignified work opportunities.

Our Vision

To build a future where financially vulnerable communities have access to predictable income opportunities, allowing them to support their families with stability, dignity, and confidence.

Our Guiding Principles

These core values guide our approach to social enterprise and community engagement, ensuring every action we take is rooted in empathy and long-term impact.

Empathy Before Solutions

We believe in listening first. Understanding real lived experiences is the only way to create solutions that actually work in the context of a mother's daily life.

Sustainability Over Aid

Temporary relief is necessary, but long-term opportunity is transformative. We focus on building models that provide lasting financial independence.

Community-Centred

Our solutions are co-created with the community to ensure they reflect real constraints.

Collaboration Matters

We partner with industry leaders and government bodies to amplify our collective impact.

Integrity in Impact

We remain honest about our challenges and committed to learning from every step.

Who does Torus support?

Through the SEEd.Lab programme, Torus focuses on supporting B40 single mothers, particularly those who are sole providers for their households, experience irregular income, and require flexible work arrangements.

Many individuals we engaged demonstrated incredible resilience and a deep desire to provide for their families, but faced barriers such as limited access to stable work, childcare responsibilities, and financial stress during income gaps.

How do we connect with communities?

Our approach is built on deep immersion and genuine conversation with the communities we serve.

Policy & Collaboration

Jabatan Pembangunan Wanita (JPW)

We engaged with JPW to gain a comprehensive understanding of existing support systems for women in Malaysia. This collaboration allowed us to identify critical gaps in economic empowerment and refine our focus on sustainable, long-term solutions rather than temporary aid.

"Strategic alignment with government bodies ensures our initiatives complement national development goals."

Research & Empathy

Focus Group Discussions

By bringing mothers together in a safe, supportive environment, we were able to hear their stories firsthand. These discussions revealed the shared challenges of balancing childcare with the need for stable income, and the incredible creativity they already use to support their families.

Ground Immersion Experience

Our team spent time in the homes and neighborhoods of the mothers we serve. This "ground immersion" was vital to seeing the practical realities of their daily lives—from the physical space available for home-based work to the community networks they rely on.

KasihnITa Programme Officiation with JPW

We were honoured to attend the officiation of KasihnITa (KASIH Ibu Tunggal), a national empowerment programme by Jabatan Pembangunan Wanita (JPW) dedicated to supporting single mothers across Malaysia. Being present at the launch deepened our understanding of the national support landscape and allowed us to connect directly with the ecosystem of organisations, agencies, and advocates working toward the same goal. This experience reinforced our conviction that sustainable impact requires alignment with existing government initiatives, not duplication. By understanding the programmes already available to single mothers, including legal guidance, financial literacy, and personal development, we can better position Torus to fill the gaps that remain, particularly around stable, flexible income access.

"Strategic alignment with national programmes ensures our initiatives reach the mothers who need them most."
